Casa Sansa

On the Rue Fabriques d'en Nabot in the old city, Casa Sansa has been serving fierce, unfussy Catalan cooking since 1988 — the kind of place where the menu changes with the season and the chef will tell you if you've ordered in the wrong order. It is consistently cited by local food writers as the truest expression of Roussillon cuisine in the city.

What's on the Plate

Expect dishes built around the Roussillon terroir: salt cod (brandade) made with Collioure anchovies, snails cooked with garlic and tomato in the Catalan style, and game from the Pyrenean foothills in autumn. The wine list leans heavily on Roussillon appellations — Maury, Banyuls and Côtes du Roussillon Villages — which are criminally underrated on the international stage.

The pa amb tomàquet — bread rubbed with ripe tomato and good olive oil — arrives as a matter of course, and you will judge every other version you eat for the rest of your life against this one.

The Room and the Vibe

The dining room is small, stone-walled and lit warmly, with the kind of slightly chaotic energy that signals a kitchen focused on cooking rather than Instagram aesthetics. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when locals pack the place.

Service is knowledgeable and opinionated in the best way — ask your server what to drink with the fish and you'll get a genuine recommendation, not an upsell.

Eating the Roussillon Way

Lunch is the main meal in this part of France and Catalonia, and Casa Sansa's weekday lunch menu offers extraordinary value — three courses with wine for a price that would barely cover a starter in Paris. Arrive at noon when the kitchen is at its sharpest.

For context, pair a meal here with a visit to the nearby Musée des Arts et Métiers Catalans to understand the deep cultural roots of everything you're eating.
