Le Clos Saint-Front

Tucked into a stone-walled dining room on the Rue de la Vertu in the heart of the Saint-Front neighbourhood, Le Clos Saint-Front is the kind of restaurant that makes you understand why Périgord has been a culinary destination for centuries. Chef Éric Vidal works with seasonal Dordogne produce and the result is cooking that feels both rooted and alive.

What to order

The menu changes with the seasons but the duck preparations are consistently outstanding — magret cooked to a rosy pink with a crust of crackling skin, or a terrine of foie gras that arrives cool and silky with a glass of Monbazillac sweet wine alongside.

In truffle season (December–February) a special menu appears featuring the black diamond in every course: shaved over scrambled eggs, folded into pasta, or perfuming a simple roast chicken in ways that justify every centime of the supplement.

The room and the atmosphere

The restaurant occupies a 16th-century townhouse with exposed stone walls, low beamed ceilings and a small courtyard for summer dining — it manages to feel both historic and unhurried rather than museum-like.

Service is attentive without being formal; the sommelier speaks excellent English and will steer you confidently through the Bergerac and Pécharmant wine list.

Booking and budget

Lunch is the better value: a two-course formule with wine typically comes in under €30, while the evening tasting menu runs to €55–€75 depending on the season and truffle content.

Reservations are essential on weekends and during the July–August high season; book at least a week ahead by phone or email.
