Bords de l'Isle & Allée des Cygnes

The Isle river curves gently around the eastern edge of Périgueux, and the tree-lined towpaths and grassy banks on both sides form a green corridor that locals use daily for running, cycling and picnicking. It's the city's living room, and spending a morning here tells you more about everyday Périgueux than any museum.

The riverside path and its wildlife

The Allée des Cygnes (Avenue of Swans) runs along the right bank of the Isle from the Pont des Barris southward, shaded by plane trees and lined with benches where fishermen sit in companionable silence. The name is accurate: mute swans, grey herons and kingfishers are regular residents.

In spring the opposite bank turns vivid green and the reflections of the cathedral domes in the slow-moving river produce one of the most photographed views in the Dordogne — without requiring any effort to reach.

Cycling and exploring further

A well-maintained cycle path follows the Isle valley for several kilometres in both directions, connecting Périgueux to the villages of Boulazac and Marsac-sur-l'Isle. Hire bikes from the Périgueux tourist office or from Cycl'Isle, a local rental shop near the Pont de la Cité.

The path crosses several small stone bridges and passes old mill buildings, a few of which have been converted into restaurants with terrace tables right above the water — ideal for a long lunch on a warm day.

Best spots along the banks

The grassy bank below the Pont Neuf is the favourite picnic spot for Périgueux families on summer weekends; buy supplies from the Saturday market and walk the ten minutes down to the river.

At dusk the light on the cathedral domes reflected in the Isle is spectacular — bring a wide-angle lens or simply sit on the bank with a glass of Bergerac rosé and watch the swallows hunt above the water.
