Marché de Sallanches — Saturday Morning Market
Every Saturday morning the broad Place de l'Église in Sallanches, just 5 km from Passy, fills with one of the liveliest traditional markets in the Haute-Savoie — a proper working market where local farmers, fromagers and charcutiers set up beside stalls selling handmade linen and Savoyarde pottery.
What to Buy & Eat
The cheese stalls are the undisputed highlight: look for wheels of Reblochon fermier from the Aravis valley, young Abondance with its distinctive concave rind, and tangy Sérac fresh from the cheesemaker's cloth. Pair a wedge with a thick slice of pain de seigle from the Boulangerie Charvin stall and eat it on the church steps.
Charcuterie from local farms includes diots (Savoyard pork sausages perfect for raclette), dried mountain ham and rillettes de canard. Several producers sell directly, so prices are significantly lower than in resort supermarkets.
Beyond the Food Stalls
Non-food vendors sell hand-embroidered tablecloths, locally turned wooden boards, wildflower honey from hives kept above 1,000 m, and seasonal plants. In December a smaller Christmas version of the market adds mulled vin chaud and artisan gift stalls.
The market wraps up by 1 pm; after shopping, the nearby Café de la Poste on the main square does a decent plat du jour for around €13 — roast chicken and gratin dauphinois on most Saturdays.
