Lac de Passy & Mont Blanc Panorama
Tucked at the foot of the Fiz massif, Lac de Passy delivers one of the most photogenic reflections of the Mont Blanc range anywhere in the valley — and almost nobody outside the Arve valley knows it exists. On a still morning the water turns into a flawless mirror, doubling the snow-capped peaks above Sallanches.
The View That Stops You Cold
The lake sits at roughly 600 m altitude on a broad glacial terrace, meaning you look across open water to an unobstructed wall of 4,000-metre summits — Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles de Warens and the Aravis chain all visible in a single sweep.
A flat 4 km walking loop circles the entire shoreline, passing reed beds full of coots and great crested grebes, with benches positioned precisely where the reflection is sharpest. Arrive before 9 am in summer and you will often have the whole east bank to yourself.
Seasons & Practicalities
Winter brings a surreal scene: frost-rimmed reeds, occasional thin ice at the edges, and the peaks dusted in fresh snow — photographers rate January and February mornings here as world-class.
In July and August the lake is open for supervised swimming from a small beach near the Passy-Plage area, and a seasonal snack bar sells crêpes and cold drinks. Parking is free at the Lac de Passy car park off the D39.
