Iglesia de San Miguel
A few streets from the cathedral stands the Romanesque-Gothic church of San Miguel, where legend holds that Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar — El Cid, Spain's greatest medieval hero — married Doña Jimena in 1074. The church is almost always empty of tourists, yet it contains one of the finest Gothic tower-fortresses in Castile and León.
History Hiding Behind a Plain Facade
The church's exterior is deliberately fortress-like: thick stone walls, narrow windows and a square tower that served as a watchtower over the medieval city. The tower's upper section, added in the 15th century, is a masterpiece of late Gothic stonework — intricate tracery and gargoyles that you can examine at close range without a single tour group in sight.
Inside, the nave retains its Romanesque proportions while the chapels accumulated Renaissance and Baroque additions over the centuries. The overall effect is of a building that has been quietly absorbing history for a thousand years without ever feeling the need to advertise the fact.
The El Cid Connection
Whether the wedding actually took place here is debated by historians, but the tradition is old enough that the church has embraced it gracefully — a small plaque and a modest display acknowledge the legend without overselling it, which feels refreshingly honest.
The real reason to visit is the atmosphere: on a weekday morning, with candles burning and pigeons murmuring in the tower above, San Miguel feels genuinely medieval in a way that more famous churches, crowded with selfie sticks, simply cannot replicate. Sit in a pew for ten minutes and listen to the silence.
