Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre Natural Park
Less than 90 minutes north of the city, the Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre–Montaña Palentina Natural Park is one of the wildest and least-visited mountain landscapes in the whole of Spain. It shelters a recovering population of Cantabrian brown bears, golden eagles, and ancient beech forests that turn incandescent gold and copper every October.
A Mountain Wilderness on Palencia's Doorstep
The park covers over 78,000 hectares of the Cantabrian mountain range, rising to 2,539 metres at Peña Prieta. The valleys carved by the nascent Río Carrión are dramatic and deeply green in spring, filled with the sound of snowmelt torrents and cuckoos calling across the beech canopy.
The village of Cervera de Pisuerga serves as the main gateway and has a small but excellent interpretation centre explaining the park's ecology, bear-tracking programme, and the traditional transhumance routes that shepherds still walk each spring and autumn.
What to Do and When to Go
The Ruta de los Tejos trail near Cardaño de Arriba takes you through a grove of ancient yew trees — some over a thousand years old — that feel genuinely primeval. The path is well-marked and manageable for reasonably fit walkers, taking about three hours return.
October is the undisputed peak season for colour and atmosphere, but spring (May–June) offers wildflowers, waterfalls at full force, and the best birdwatching. In winter, the high passes close with snow but the lower valleys remain accessible and eerily beautiful under frost.
