Torre degli Anziani Rooftop, Palazzo della Ragione
Climb to the loggia level of the Palazzo della Ragione — the vast 13th-century law court that separates the two market squares — and you get a rooftop-level panorama over terracotta rooftops, the green dome of Sant'Antonio and the Euganean Hills rolling away to the south. Almost nobody is up here.
The view and what you see
From the upper external gallery you can pick out the octagonal baptistery beside the Duomo, the tower of the Municipio, and on a clear winter morning the snow-capped line of the Dolomites floating above the plain to the north.
The Salone inside — the vast undivided hall on the piano nobile — is itself a spectacle: 81 metres long, covered in a 15th-century fresco calendar of astrological signs, and dominated by a wooden Trojan horse the size of a caravan.
Practical tips for the climb
The Palazzo is entered from Piazza della Frutta; the ticket desk is just inside the main door. The Salone is on the first floor and the external loggia is accessible from there.
Combine the visit with the market below — arrive at 08:00, walk the stalls, then head upstairs when the Palazzo opens at 09:00 for the best morning light on the hills.
