Why it changed art forever
Giotto broke from the flat, golden Byzantine tradition and gave his biblical figures weight, shadow and genuine human emotion — the weeping angels above the Crucifixion scene are heartbreaking even today.
The 39 narrative panels move from the life of Joachim and Anna through the Passion of Christ, arranged in three tiers that read like a graphic novel from left to right around the nave.
