Ruta del Alba — Teverga Gorge Day Trip

Just 50 kilometres south of Oviedo, the Río Alba carves through a dramatic limestone gorge in the Teverga valley, and the walking trail that follows it — the Ruta del Alba — is arguably the most beautiful half-day hike within reach of any Asturian city. Emerald pools, hanging oak forests and the occasional otter reward the two-hour round trip.

The Walk Itself

The trail begins at the village of La Plaza in the Teverga municipality and follows the river upstream through a gorge so narrow in places that the path is carved directly into the cliff face above the water. The total distance is around 7 km return with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for most fitness levels.

In spring, the gorge walls drip with ferns and wildflowers and the river runs jade-green from snowmelt; in autumn, the oak and chestnut canopy turns amber and gold and the light through the gorge is extraordinary in the late afternoon. Bring waterproof footwear regardless of season — the path crosses the river on stepping stones twice.

Wildlife & the Senda del Oso Connection

The Teverga valley sits within the Parque Natural de Las Ubiñas-La Mesa, a protected area that is home to one of Europe's last significant brown bear populations. You are unlikely to see a bear on the Ruta del Alba itself, but wolf tracks in riverside mud are occasionally spotted by sharp-eyed walkers in winter.

From Teverga you can also join the famous Senda del Oso (Bear Trail) cycling and walking path, which follows a disused mining railway through the valley and passes two large bear enclosures at Proaza where rescued bears live in semi-wild conditions — a good option if you have children in tow.
