The Cámara Santa & Its Treasures
Built by Alfonso II in the 9th century, the Cámara Santa is a jewel-box of early medieval art housing the Cruz de los Ángeles (808 AD) and the Cruz de la Victoria (908 AD) — two gold-and-gem-encrusted crosses that became the symbols of Asturias itself.
The apostle statues flanking the nave entrance are considered masterpieces of 12th-century Romanesque sculpture, their elongated faces radiating an eerie, timeless calm that photographs beautifully in the soft interior light.
Climbing the Tower & Exploring the Cloister
Pay the small surcharge to climb the cathedral tower for a 360-degree panorama over Oviedo's terracotta roofscape, the green Asturian hills and, on a clear winter morning, a distant smudge of the Picos de Europa.
The Gothic cloister below is far less visited than the nave and offers a tranquil courtyard where orange trees grow and stone carvings weather gracefully — arrive before 10 am to have it almost entirely to yourself.
