Pineta di Castel Fusano Nature Reserve
Stretching for 900 hectares between the Ostia Antica ruins and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Pineta di Castel Fusano is one of the last surviving coastal pine forests of the Roman coastline — a fragrant, shaded world of umbrella pines, wild boar tracks and rare migratory birds. It's a genuine natural treasure on the doorstep of a capital city.
Walking and Cycling the Reserve
A network of well-marked dirt trails and dedicated cycling paths threads through the pineta, most of them flat and easy. Rent a bike from one of the stands near Ostia Lido station (around €8 for a half-day) and follow the Viale della Pineta to reach the hunting lodge of Castel Fusano, a 17th-century Chigi family villa now used as a municipal events space, sitting in a clearing of extraordinary stillness.
Early morning is magical: the low sun filters through the pine canopy in long golden shafts, the resin smell is intense, and you're likely to spot green woodpeckers, hoopoes and — if you're very quiet — a roe deer picking its way between the trunks.
Where the Forest Meets the Sea
At the southern edge of the reserve, the pines thin out and give way to a strip of protected dune beach — one of the few genuinely wild stretches of coastline within the Rome metropolitan area. Swimming here is free, the sand is coarser and less manicured than the lido beaches to the north, and the water is noticeably cleaner.
The WWF Oasis of Castel Porziano borders the reserve to the south and is open for guided visits on selected weekends — book via the WWF Italia website for access to one of the most biodiverse coastal habitats in central Italy.
