Ostia Antica Archaeological Park
Step into one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world, where 2,000-year-old streets, mosaics and taverns stretch across 150 hectares just 30 km from central Rome. Unlike the Colosseum crowds, you can wander here in near-solitude, hearing little but birdsong and the crunch of ancient gravel underfoot.
The Forum and Capitolium
The heart of the ancient city is the Forum, dominated by the Capitolium temple whose brick staircase you can still climb for a commanding view over the ruins. Flanking it is the Temple of Rome and Augustus, its white marble columns gleaming against the sky on a clear morning.
Don't miss the Piazzale delle Corporazioni — a colonnaded square where 61 trading guilds once advertised their services in vivid floor mosaics depicting elephants, dolphins and grain ships. It's one of the most photogenic spots in any Roman ruin anywhere in Italy.
Baths, Taverns and the Theatre
The Terme di Nettuno (Baths of Neptune) contains a jaw-dropping floor mosaic of the sea god driving his chariot, fully intact and open to view from an elevated walkway — no barriers, no glass, just the mosaic at your feet. Nearby, the Thermopolium, an ancient fast-food bar, still has its marble counter and painted menu on the wall.
The 2nd-century theatre, carved into the hillside, seats 3,000 and hosts summer concerts under the stars — check the Ostia Antica Festival programme before you visit. Sitting in those stone tiers at dusk, watching the swallows wheel overhead, is genuinely moving.
