Monte Novo San Giovanni Viewpoint
The dirt track that climbs from Orgosolo toward the Supramonte plateau delivers one of Barbagia's most breathtaking panoramas at Monte Novo San Giovanni, where the limestone massif drops away into forested gorges and the sea glints on the horizon on clear days. It is the kind of view that makes you forget you were ever in a hurry.
The Drive and the Reward
From Orgosolo, follow the SP22 north and then take the unpaved forestry track signposted for Monte Novo San Giovanni — a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended, especially after rain. The drive itself through cork-oak and holm-oak forest is half the pleasure.
At the plateau edge, the terrain opens suddenly to reveal the full sweep of the Supramonte: grey limestone cliffs, deep valleys carpeted in macchia scrub, and the distant profile of Monte Corrasi above Oliena. On exceptionally clear winter days, the Gulf of Orosei is visible far to the east.
Best Time and What to Bring
Sunrise and the hour before sunset produce the most dramatic light, turning the limestone bluffs warm amber. Midday in July and August is harsh and hazy — avoid it for photography.
Bring water, a windproof layer (the plateau is exposed and breezy even in summer) and a detailed hiking map such as the Kompass 1:50,000 sheet 649. Mobile signal is unreliable on the plateau.
The area is also a starting point for longer treks into the Supramonte, including routes toward the Gola di Gorropu canyon, so the viewpoint can anchor a full day of exploration.
