Fonte Istiritta Spring and Shepherd Trails
A few kilometres outside Orgosolo on the old mule tracks that shepherds still use for transhumance, the natural spring of Fonte Istiritta feeds a stone trough shaded by ancient ilex oaks where flocks have watered for centuries. Almost no tourist ever finds it, yet it distils everything that makes the Barbagia interior so quietly extraordinary.
Finding the Spring
The path begins at the edge of the village on the road toward Mamoiada; a faded wooden signpost marks the start of a wide mule track that climbs gently through cork-oak woodland. After about 45 minutes of easy walking the trees open onto a clearing where the spring emerges from a fissure in the limestone and fills a low granite trough worn smooth by generations of use.
In spring the clearing is carpeted with wild orchids, asphodel and rockrose; in autumn the oaks drop acorns that the semi-wild black Sardinian pigs root through noisily. Either season, the place feels entirely removed from the 21st century.
The Wider Shepherd Landscape
Continue past the spring on the same track for another 30 minutes and you reach a series of stone pinniles — the circular dry-stone shepherd huts of the Barbagia — some still used seasonally by local families. Do not enter occupied ones, but the abandoned examples can be explored freely and are architecturally fascinating.
If you time your walk for early morning between October and May, you may encounter a shepherd moving his flock along the track — a scene of transhumance that has changed little since Grazia Deledda described it in her Nobel Prize-winning novels set in this very landscape. Stop, say buongiorno, and let the flock flow around you.
