Cirque de Navacelles
Carved over millennia by the Vis river into the limestone plateaux of the Grands Causses, the Cirque de Navacelles is one of the most dramatic natural amphitheatres in Europe — and remarkably, it still flies under most tourists' radars. The view from the belvederes
Two official belvederes — one on the Blandas plateau to the south, one on the Rogues side to the north — look down into the near-perfect circular canyon. The Blandas viewpoint is the more dramatic: you peer straight down to the white village and its Romanesque bridge, the Vis river looping around an isolated rock pillar in a near-complete meander.
Come at dawn or dusk when the limestone glows amber and the valley is still in shadow. Midday light flattens the scene considerably — this is a place that rewards early risers.
The valley floor and the village
Drive or cycle the switchback road to the valley floor and you enter a different microclimate: warmer, quieter and extraordinarily lush compared to the dry causse above. The hamlet has a handful of houses, a small church and one or two gîtes — it is one of the most remote inhabited places in southern France.
The Vis river is crystal clear and cold even in August, perfect for a short wade. The old stone bridge, the Pont de la Foux, dates to the medieval period and is still the only crossing in the cirque.
Getting there and combining with the Gorges de la Vis
Navacelles is about 80 km north of Montpellier via the D25 and D130 — allow 1.5 hours each way on winding roads. There is no public transport; a car is essential.
Combine the visit with a drive through the Gorges de la Vis to the east, where the road threads between towering limestone cliffs above the river. The round trip from Montpellier via the gorges and cirque makes a spectacular full-day itinerary.
