Mont Sainte-Odile Summit Terrace
Perched on a sandstone outcrop 764 metres above the Rhine plain, the convent of Mont Sainte-Odile is one of Alsace's most significant pilgrimage sites — but even secular visitors are rewarded with a sweeping panorama stretching from the Black Forest to the Vosges foothills and on clear days all the way to the Alps.
The View and the Convent
The terrace beside the convent church faces east and delivers one of the great Alsatian vistas: a chessboard of vineyards, villages and the silver thread of the Rhine far below. Sunrise visits in autumn, when mist fills the plain and only the church spires poke through, are genuinely otherworldly.
The convent itself, founded in the 7th century by Sainte Odile, patron saint of Alsace, is still home to a community of Augustinian nuns. Visitors can walk freely through the chapels, including the Chapelle de la Croix with its Romanesque mosaics.
The Pagan Wall Mystery
Encircling the summit for over 10 km is the Mur Païen — the Pagan Wall — a megalithic dry-stone fortification whose exact origin and purpose remain debated by archaeologists. Walking a section of it through the pine forest adds an eerie, exploratory dimension to the visit.
The GR5 long-distance trail passes directly through the site, so it's easy to combine a pilgrimage-style walk up from the village of Ottrott (about 1.5 hours) with the summit visit and descend on a different forest path.
