Marché de Noël d'Obernai
Obernai's Christmas market is widely rated among the most authentic in Alsace precisely because it hasn't been scaled up into a tourist factory — wooden chalets cluster around the illuminated belfry and the smell of bredele biscuits and mulled Gewurztraminer hangs in the cold air.
What Makes It Different
Unlike the vast Strasbourg market, every stall here is vetted by the municipality for locally made goods — you'll find hand-painted faïence from Soufflenheim, carved wooden nutcrackers from the Vosges and hand-blown glass baubles rather than mass-produced imports.
The market spills across Place du Marché and the adjacent Rue du Général Gouraud, so it feels immersive rather than linear. Evening visits after 5 pm are magical: the half-timbered facades are strung with warm-white lights and the square empties of day-trippers.
What to Eat and Drink
Look for the stall selling tarte flambée (flammekueche) straight from a wood-fired oven — the thin, crispy Alsatian flatbread topped with crème fraîche, lardons and onion is the definitive market snack.
Wash it down with a ceramic mug of vin chaud made with local Pinot Noir and whole spices. You pay a small deposit on the mug and can keep it as a souvenir — each year's design is different and they're genuinely collectible.
