AQUAGROVE Aquarium
Opened in a sleek harbourside building, AQUAGROVE houses over 150 species native to the Galician rías — from spider crabs and rays to the seahorses that colonise the seagrass beds of the Ría de Arousa. The touch-pool section lets children handle starfish and sea urchins under staff supervision, making it one of the best family stops on the Costa da Morte.
The aquarium also runs educational sessions in Spanish and Galician explaining the life cycle of mussels, oysters and clams — surprisingly gripping even for adults, and the context makes that evening's dinner taste even better.
Mussel Raft Boat Trips
Several operators run 1.5–2 hour excursions from O Grove harbour out to the bateas — the wooden rafts from which hundreds of mussel-laden ropes hang into the cold, plankton-rich water of the ría. Guides haul up a rope to show you clusters of living mussels and explain the 14-month growth cycle from seed to harvest.
The boats typically include a tasting of freshly steamed mussels on deck with a glass of Albariño — eating a mussel minutes after it left the water, with the ría still visible around you, is a defining Galicia memory. Look for operators such as Cruceiros Ría de Arousa departing from the O Grove embarcadero.
