La Botte de Nevers

A short walk from the cathedral, La Botte de Nevers is the kind of resolutely regional French restaurant that is becoming harder to find — white tablecloths, a handwritten plat du jour, and a kitchen that takes Charolais beef and local river fish seriously without dressing them in unnecessary complexity. Locals have been lunching here for decades, which is the only endorsement that matters.

What to Order

The bœuf bourguignon is a benchmark — slow-braised Charolais in a Burgundy wine sauce that has been reduced to a glossy, deeply savoury depth. Paired with a glass of Saint-Pourçain rouge from just up the Allier valley, it is the definitive Nivernais lunch.

In spring and early summer, look for sandre (pike-perch) from the Loire on the menu — it is typically pan-fried with beurre blanc and served with braised endive. River fish cookery of this quality is rare outside the Loire valley and should not be skipped.

The Local Wine Angle

Nevers sits at the southern tip of the greater Loire wine corridor, and the restaurant's list leans into the underappreciated appellations nearby: Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre for whites, Saint-Pourçain for reds. Ask the server for the carafe option — it is invariably a local wine at a fair price.

The lunch formule (typically €16–22 for two courses) is one of the best-value ways to eat seriously in Burgundy. Book ahead for Friday and Saturday lunch; the room fills quickly with regulars.
