Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Nevers

Rising above the Loire rooftops, Nevers' cathedral is one of France's most architecturally curious: it has two apses — one Romanesque, one Gothic — facing opposite ends of the nave, the result of centuries of rebuilding that left both intact rather than demolishing the old. Two Apses, One Story

The west end is pure 10th-century Romanesque — squat, solid and honey-coloured — while the east choir soars in 13th-century Gothic verticality. Walking the full length of the nave feels like moving through 400 years of French ecclesiastical ambition in under two minutes.

Look up at the triforium gallery and you will spot carved capitals depicting biblical scenes worn smooth by eight centuries of incense-laden air. The crypt beneath the Romanesque apse holds early Christian sarcophagi that predate the current building by several hundred years.

The Modern Glass Surprise

After Allied bombing levelled much of Nevers in 1944, the cathedral lost almost all its medieval glass. Rather than copying the originals, the chapter commissioned abstract windows from artists including Jean Bazaine and Gérard Garouste — a bold postwar decision that divides purists but rewards the open-minded.

Visit on a sunny morning when the light angles through the south transept windows and projects shifting pools of violet and gold across the limestone floor. It is one of the most quietly spectacular light shows in Burgundy, and almost no one is there to see it.
