Borgo Medievale di Nettuno
Tucked behind the seafront and wrapped around Forte Sangallo, Nettuno's medieval quarter is one of the most intact and least-touristed historic centres on the entire Lazio coast. Narrow cobbled vicoli open without warning onto sun-drenched piazzas, flower boxes spill from every window ledge, and the pace of life feels entirely unchanged from a century ago.
Wandering the Vicoli
The borgo is small enough to explore in an hour but rewarding enough to fill an entire afternoon. Duck into Via dell'Asilo, follow the sound of a TV through an open shutter, and you will stumble upon a tiny bar where locals nurse espresso at a marble counter that has been there since the 1950s.
Look up as you walk: many of the medieval houses retain their original stone corbels, Gothic arched doorways and external staircases. The preservation here is organic rather than curated, which makes it feel genuinely alive rather than like an open-air museum.
Piazza Colonna and the Church of San Giovanni
The heart of the borgo is Piazza Colonna, anchored by an ancient Roman column repurposed as a civic monument and flanked by the Church of San Giovanni Battista, whose Baroque interior hides a surprisingly fine collection of 17th-century paintings. The piazza is the place to be at the passeggiata hour, roughly 18:00–20:00, when the whole neighbourhood seems to materialise at once.
A few steps away, the tiny Oratorio di Santa Maria Goretti marks the house where the young martyr Maria Goretti spent her final years before her death in 1902 — she was canonised in 1950 and remains a figure of intense local devotion.
