Vieux Morlaix & the Maisons à Pondalez

The old town clustered beneath the viaduct is one of the best-preserved medieval streetscapes in Brittany, its narrow venelles (alleyways) lined with half-timbered houses that lean towards each other like gossiping neighbours. The star attractions are the extraordinary maisons à pondalez — lantern-houses with a central wooden pillar rising through every floor.

The lantern-houses explained

A pondalez is a spiral wooden staircase built around a single central post, lit by an open lantern shaft that floods the interior with daylight. The technique was perfected by Morlaix's wealthy 16th-century linen merchants and is found almost nowhere else in the world. The Maison de la Duchesse Anne on Rue du Mur (open to visitors) is the finest surviving example, with intricate carved oak panels on every landing.

Rue Ange de Guernisac and Rue du Mur are the two streets where the concentration of corbelled timber-framed houses is highest. Walk slowly and look up — the upper storeys jut further out than the ground floors, a medieval trick to maximise floor space without paying more ground-level tax.

Hidden courtyards and venelles

Duck into Venelle du Créou off the Grand'Rue and you enter a stepped alley of mossy stone that feels untouched since the 17th century. Several of these passages connect the lower town to the hillside gardens above, making the old quarter a surprisingly vertical neighbourhood.

The Place Allende end of the old town opens onto a small square where a bronze statue of the corsair Jean Bart stands — a reminder that Morlaix's merchants were not always strictly law-abiding. The whole quarter is compact enough to explore thoroughly in two hours on foot.
