Sentiero dei Borghi: Montefalco to Bevagna Trail
A waymarked 10-kilometre trail connects Montefalco to the perfectly preserved Roman-medieval town of Bevagna through a continuous corridor of Sagrantino and Trebbiano vineyards, olive groves and sunflower fields. This is one of the most rewarding half-day walks in Umbria — flat to gently rolling, requiring no special equipment, and ending in a town with excellent restaurants.
The Route
The trail leaves Montefalco through the northern gate and immediately drops into the vineyard landscape, following farm tracks and gravel roads marked with red-and-white CAI blazes. The middle section passes through the hamlet of Torre del Colle, where a small bar is the only refreshment stop on the route — check opening hours before you leave. The final 3 km cross the flat Topino river plain into Bevagna's Roman walls.
Bevagna itself rewards the walk: its Piazza Silvestri contains two Romanesque churches (San Silvestro, 1195, and San Michele Arcangelo, 12th century) and a Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli that together form one of the most harmonious medieval squares in all of Italy. Allow at least an hour to explore before catching the bus or a taxi back to Montefalco.
When to Walk & What to Bring
April to June and September to October are the ideal months: temperatures are moderate, wildflowers line the paths in spring, and the vineyards turn gold in autumn. July and August are manageable only if you start before 8 a.m. — the exposed vineyard tracks offer no shade and the midday heat is serious.
Wear trail shoes or sturdy trainers; the gravel tracks can be slippery after rain. Carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person. A detailed trail map is downloadable from the Montefalco tourist office website (comune.montefalco.pg.it) or pick up a printed copy at the IAT office on Via Ringhiera Umbra.
