Mercato Settimanale di Montefalco (Weekly Market)

Every Tuesday morning the lower car-park area outside Montefalco's medieval walls fills with stalls selling local produce, seasonal vegetables, pecorino, cured meats, ceramics and clothing — the kind of unpretentious weekly market that feeds real families rather than tourist wallets. Arrive by 9 a.m. to catch the farmers before the best truffle honey and dried porcini sell out.

What to Buy

The produce stalls closest to the town gate are run by local contadini (smallholders) who bring whatever is in season: fat green Castelluccio lentils in summer, black truffles shaved to order in autumn and winter, bundles of wild asparagus in April. Prices are a fraction of what you'd pay in a specialist deli. Bring cash — most vendors do not accept cards.

Look for vendors selling homemade conserves: truffle paste, wild boar ragù in jars, and the intensely flavoured sun-dried tomatoes packed in local olive oil. A jar of Sagrantino-infused mostarda (fruit preserve) makes an excellent and genuinely local gift that won't be found in airport shops.

Beyond the Food Stalls

The outer ring of stalls sells household goods, work clothing, cheap ceramics and linen — the practical side of a functioning rural market. It is not picturesque in a staged way, which is precisely what makes it authentic. Locals arrive on foot or by battered Fiat Panda, exchange gossip, and argue cheerfully about the price of pecorino.

After shopping, carry your haul up through the Porta Sant'Agostino gate into the historic centre and find a bench on Piazza del Comune for an impromptu picnic. The bar on the square makes excellent espresso and will sell you a cornetto to go with it.
