Pont Vieux & Quai de Montmurat
The 14th-century Pont Vieux — a seven-arch bridge of rose-pink brick and stone — is the defining image of Montauban, and the view from the Quai de Montmurat on the west bank is the spot that unlocks it. Come at dusk when the bridge and the bishop's palace blush amber above the slow green Tarn.
The Bridge Up Close
Built between 1303 and 1335, Pont Vieux is one of the oldest surviving Gothic bridges in France and was designed by Étienne de Ferrières. Walking across it takes only a few minutes but the views downstream toward the weir and upstream toward the willows are worth lingering over.
At the centre of the bridge stands a 17th-century stone cross; on either side, low stone benches invite you to sit and watch kayakers navigate the Tarn below.
Best Times and Angles
The classic postcard angle is from the Quai de Montmurat, looking northeast so the bridge fills the frame with the museum tower behind it. Golden hour (roughly 30 minutes before sunset) turns the pink brick to deep copper — set your alarm.
Early morning in summer is equally rewarding: mist often lingers on the Tarn, the light is soft and you'll have the quayside entirely to yourself. Photographers routinely rate this among the most photogenic river scenes in the Midi-Pyrénées.
