Marché National des Producteurs de Montauban
Every Saturday morning the Place Nationale fills with producers who have driven straight from their farms in the Tarn-et-Garonne, arguably France's most fertile market-garden department. This is not a tourist market — it is where Montaubanais actually shop, which makes it all the more authentic and rewarding.
What to Buy and Taste
The department is France's top producer of golden kiwis, chasselas grapes and Chasselas de Moissac AOC table grapes, and you'll find them piled high in season (September–October). Year-round highlights include creamy chèvre from the Quercy hills, violet-scented honey, and fat Quercy melons that perfume the entire arcade.
Charcuterie stalls offer sliced magret de canard séché and rillettes d'oie at prices that will make you wish you'd brought a bigger cooler bag. Arrive before 10:00 to beat the crowds and secure the best of the cheese selection.
The Setting: Place Nationale
The market unfolds beneath the double-arcaded pink-brick galleries of Place Nationale, one of the finest 17th-century arcaded squares in France. The warm terracotta stone glows particularly beautifully in morning light, making the weekly shop feel like a scene from a period film.
After shopping, pull up a chair at one of the café terraces inside the arcades and order a café crème — the people-watching alone is worth the trip.
