The North Ramparts & Garden of the Abbey
While the Grande Rue funnels visitors upward in a single noisy stream, the island's north ramparts offer a virtually crowd-free alternative route with unbeatable views over open water and access to a little-known terraced garden that most day-trippers never find.
Walking the North Ramparts
A staircase just past the island gate on the left leads up to the rampart walk that circles the island's quieter northern and western flanks. Here the crowds dissolve almost instantly, replaced by sea wind, wheeling gulls and views of the open bay that stretch without interruption to the horizon.
The rampart path is free to walk and connects back to the abbey approach via the western staircase — making it a practical and scenic alternative to the main street for the upward climb.
The Terraced Abbey Garden
Tucked against the abbey's western wall, a small terraced garden planted with medicinal herbs, roses and espaliered fruit trees offers a rare patch of green tranquillity on the rock. It is accessible from the rampart walk and is almost always quiet even in the height of summer.
Benedictine monks historically cultivated similar gardens here for food and medicine; the current plantings nod to that tradition with lavender, sage and fennel alongside the ornamental roses.
Timing Your Exploration
The north rampart walk is best done in the morning when the light falls on the abbey's flank and the mainland coast glows in the distance. It takes roughly 20 minutes at a leisurely pace and can be combined with the abbey visit without backtracking.
In winter, when visitor numbers drop sharply, the entire north side of the island takes on an austere, almost mystical character — just you, the stone and the grey Atlantic light.
