Ribeira Sacra Catamaran on the Sil Canyon
Just 20 kilometres from Monforte, the Sil River has carved a canyon so deep and dramatic that the Romans called it the Thebaid of the West — a place of wild solitude where Benedictine monasteries cling to cliff faces above terraced vineyards. The best way to see it is from the water on a glass-sided catamaran.
The Boat Trip from Os Peares or Doade
Catamarans depart from the embarcadero at Doade (near Sober) and from Os Peares, running 90-minute round trips through the deepest section of the canyon where the walls rise 500 metres from the waterline. The silence between the cliffs is extraordinary — broken only by the engine's hum and the occasional cry of a griffon vulture overhead.
Look up and you'll spot the Monastery of Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil on the northern rim, its three Romanesque cloisters barely visible through the oak and chestnut canopy. In autumn the canyon turns every shade of amber and copper — arguably the finest fall foliage scene in Spain.
Combining with a Vineyard Visit
The Ribeira Sacra's heroic viticulture — hand-harvested Mencía grapes from near-vertical slate terraces — is best understood from the water, where you can see the full improbability of the vineyards. Several boat operators partner with local wineries for combined cruise-and-tasting packages.
From Monforte, drive the OU-602 toward Sober for the Doade embarcadero (about 25 minutes). Book tickets online in advance during July and August when boats sell out days ahead. The trip runs year-round weather permitting.
