Mercado de Abastos de Monforte
Monforte's covered market hall is a working, unfussy place where local farmers and fishmongers have traded for generations — a vivid contrast to the tourist-polished markets of bigger Galician cities. The Tuesday street market that spills outside is the real spectacle, drawing villagers from across the Lemos valley.
Inside the Market Hall
The permanent hall on Rúa Comercio operates Monday to Saturday and is the place to stock up on Galician staples: pungent tetilla and San Simón cheeses sweating under glass, paprika-dusted chorizo, filloas (thin Galician crêpes) wrapped in paper, and enormous percebes if the Atlantic boats have been lucky.
The fish counter alone is worth the detour — whole turbot, glistening sardines, spider crabs and barnacles arrive from the Rías Baixas overnight. Stallholders will happily explain what's freshest and, if you ask nicely, point you toward the best restaurant to have it cooked that same evening.
The Tuesday Street Market
On Tuesday mornings the market spills into the surrounding streets in a broader weekly fair where farmers sell seasonal vegetables, honey, live chickens and handmade baskets alongside stalls of cheap clothing and hardware. It's a genuinely local affair — you'll hear Galego spoken almost exclusively.
Arrive before 10:00 to see the market at its fullest. By noon the best produce is gone and stallholders are already packing up. A €1.50 café con leche at the bar inside the hall is the ideal fuel before you browse.
