Piazza del Municipio & Belvedere Pizzo
Modica is split between an upper and lower town carved into two converging gorges, and the best way to grasp this extraordinary topography is from the twin viewpoints at Piazza del Municipio and the Belvedere Pizzo just above it. The view is genuinely jaw-dropping.
Piazza del Municipio
The wide terrace in front of the 18th-century Town Hall looks directly across to the Duomo di San Giorgio on its opposing ridge — the two Baroque landmarks face each other like chess pieces across a ravine packed with honey-coloured houses.
At dusk the entire scene turns amber, and the illuminated cathedral façade glows against a deep blue sky in a way that makes every photographer reach immediately for their camera.
Belvedere Pizzo — the higher perch
A short walk uphill from the piazza brings you to the Belvedere Pizzo, a small terrace that adds the Irminio river valley and the distant Iblean plateau to the panorama.
On clear winter days you can see all the way to the Sicilian coast at Pozzallo, roughly 30 km south — a reminder of how high above sea level this city actually sits.
When to go
Sunset is the obvious answer, but the view at night — when the stacked houses are lit like an advent calendar — is arguably even more magical.
Early morning is rewarding too: mist sometimes fills the lower valley, leaving the church towers floating above a white sea.
