Duomo di San Giorgio
Modica's skyline is ruled by the theatrical façade of San Giorgio, a UNESCO-listed Baroque cathedral that rises at the top of a monumental 250-step staircase. Few churches in Sicily make an entrance quite like this one.
A staircase worth every step
The climb up the zigzagging Via Mercé staircase is itself a spectacle — terracotta pots, wrought-iron balconies and panoramic glimpses of Modica Alta unfold with every flight.
At the top, Rosario Gagliardi's 1738 façade erupts in three tiers of columns, saints and swirling stone detail, all carved from the warm golden limestone that defines this valley.
Inside the cathedral
The interior is calmer than the exterior promises: a single nave lined with polychrome marble side chapels and a luminous 15th-century altarpiece of St George slaying the dragon.
Look up at the painted wooden ceiling and then down at the ancient clock in the bell tower — it still shows the time of the catastrophic 1693 earthquake that levelled the original church.
Best time to visit
Come at golden hour when the limestone glows amber and the swifts circle the bell tower screaming — it is one of the most cinematic moments in all of Sicily.
The cathedral is also the focal point of the Festa di San Giorgio in late April, when the entire staircase is lit with candles and the town erupts in fireworks.
