Gorges du Tarn & Gorges de la Jonte
Within 40 minutes of Millau, two of France's most spectacular river gorges cut through the Grands Causses limestone plateaux. The Gorges du Tarn and the adjacent Gorges de la Jonte together form a UNESCO World Heritage landscape where griffon vultures wheel overhead and the rivers run turquoise-green between 500-metre cliffs.
The Gorges du Tarn by Canoe
The classic way to experience the Gorges du Tarn is by canoe or kayak from Sainte-Énimie (about 50 km north of Millau via the D907b). Several outfitters rent self-guided canoes for the 24-km paddle to La Malène, passing the Cirque des Baumes — an amphitheatre of layered limestone that glows amber in afternoon light.
The river is gentle enough for beginners in summer (Grade I–II) but the scenery is Grade V spectacular. Stop at the Détroits narrows, where the canyon walls pinch to just a few metres apart and the light turns cathedral-green.
Vultures of the Jonte
The Gorges de la Jonte, accessed via Le Rozier village (25 km from Millau), is the best place in France to watch griffon vultures at close range. Reintroduced in 1981 after a century of absence, the colony now numbers over 200 birds; on warm afternoons they ride thermals at eye level with the clifftop viewpoints.
Park at Le Rozier and walk the sentier des vautours (vulture trail) to the Belvédère de Capluc for views straight down into the gorge. The Maison des Vautours at Meyrueis has telescopes, live nest cameras and expert staff who can tell you exactly where the birds are roosting that day.
