Tappeinerweg Promenade Viewpoint
Carved into the south-facing hillside above Merano in 1893 by physician Franz Tappeiner, this 4 km pedestrian promenade is the single best vantage point over the town's terracotta rooftops, the Passer valley and the jagged Texel Group peaks. Mediterranean plants — agaves, palms, bougainvillea — line the path at an elevation where frost rarely settles.
The Walk Itself
Starting from the Gilf Promenade near the old town, the Tappeinerweg climbs gently to about 400 m above sea level and can be completed in a leisurely 90 minutes one-way. Benches are positioned at every natural viewpoint, and small plaques identify the exotic botanical specimens planted by Tappeiner himself.
The best light falls on the town in the late afternoon when the valley fills with golden hour warmth. The section above the Castel Labers hotel offers the most unobstructed panorama of the entire Merano basin.
Connecting the Walk to Other Sights
The western end of the promenade connects directly to the Trauttmansdorff Gardens, making it easy to combine both in a single half-day loop. A short detour uphill leads to the Pulverturm (Powder Tower), a 14th-century fortification with a small terrace overlooking the valley.
The path is accessible year-round and is lit in the evenings. In spring, wisteria and almond trees bloom along the lower sections, creating one of the most photogenic stretches of any urban walk in the Alps.
