Merano Christmas Market (Meraner Weihnachtsmarkt)
Ranked among the most beautiful Christmas markets in Italy, Merano's version lines the colonnaded Lauben arcades and the Passer riverbank with over 80 hand-picked stalls selling artisan crafts, spiced Glühwein and local Zelten fruit bread. The Belle Époque architecture provides a backdrop no other Alpine market can match.
What Makes It Different
Unlike the mass-produced trinket markets found elsewhere, Merano's curators apply a strict quality filter: expect hand-turned wooden ornaments from Val Gardena, locally produced grappa, and beeswax candles from Vinschgau valley beekeepers. The scent of roasted chestnuts and cinnamon drifts through the arcades from the first day of Advent.
The market stretches along Piazza della Rena and Piazza del Grano, with a separate 'Nativity Village' on the Passer promenade featuring life-sized carved figures — a tradition dating to the 1990s.
Eating & Drinking Your Way Through
Kiachl — deep-fried dough pillows dusted with sauerkraut or cranberry jam — are the essential street food here and almost impossible to find outside South Tyrol. Pair them with a cup of Meraner Glühwein, which uses local Vernatsch wine rather than the usual blends.
For a sit-down break, duck into the 19th-century Café Unter den Lauben on the arcade for a slice of Apfelstrudel made with Vinschgau apples — the region's most prized variety.
