Megève Saturday Market
Every Saturday morning the Place de l'Église and surrounding streets fill with farmers, cheesemakers and artisans from across the Haute-Savoie, turning Megève's already-photogenic medieval centre into a sensory feast. This is where locals actually shop, not just tourists.
What you'll find
Stalls overflow with Reblochon fermier straight from Aravis farms, aged Beaufort d'Alpage, cured saucisson de montagne and pots of local honey. Cheesemakers often cut samples on the spot — it's perfectly acceptable to taste before you buy.
Seasonal produce dominates: look for wild blueberries and chanterelles in late summer, walnuts from the Isère valley in autumn, and raclette wheels all year round. A handful of stalls sell handmade pottery and embroidered linens if you want a non-edible souvenir.
How to do it right
Arrive by 9 am to beat the crowds and catch producers before their best stock sells out. The market winds down around 12:30 pm. Grab a coffee and a croissant at the nearby Boulangerie-Pâtisserie Dumas on Route du Bouchet to fuel your browsing.
Bring a tote bag and cash — not every stall accepts cards. The atmosphere is relaxed and vendors are happy to chat about their farms and production methods, especially if you attempt a few words of French.
Year-round rhythm
The market runs every Saturday regardless of season, though it's largest in July and August when the village population swells with summer visitors. A smaller version also appears on Wednesday mornings in high summer.
In December a dedicated Marché de Noël sets up around the same square, adding mulled wine, carved wooden decorations and artisan gift stalls to the usual food vendors — one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Alps.
