Chapelle Saint-Nicolas de Véroce
Perched on a rocky spur at 1,730 metres above the hamlet of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce — reachable by ski in winter or a 45-minute hike from Megève in summer — this tiny 18th-century chapel holds one of the most extraordinary Baroque interiors in the entire Alps, yet barely appears in any guidebook.
The chapel itself
Built between 1699 and 1729, the chapel was funded by local guides and mule-drivers who crossed the Mont Blanc massif for trade and needed divine protection on the passes. The interior is a riot of gilded stucco, trompe-l'œil frescoes and painted wooden statues — extraordinary craftsmanship in such a remote location.
A small museum adjacent to the chapel (Musée de l'Alpage) displays the votive offerings left by travellers who survived dangerous crossings: painted ex-votos, carved wooden objects and old alpine equipment. It's one of the most authentic and moving small museums in the region.
Getting there
In summer, a waymarked trail (GR TMB variant) climbs from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains through forest and pasture to the chapel in about 90 minutes. From Megève, the Mont d'Arbois gondola brings you within a 45-minute walk across the plateau — combine both for a satisfying half-day loop.
In winter the chapel sits directly on the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area. A short blue run from the Col de Voza direction passes right beside it. Skiers often stop for five minutes to peer through the iron-grille door — the interior is visible even when the chapel is locked.
The view from the spur
The rocky promontory on which the chapel stands offers a 180-degree panorama that takes in Mont Blanc, the Aiguilles de Chamonix, the Aravis range and the broad Arve valley below. At sunset the light on the granite peaks is extraordinary.
Almost nobody outside the local area knows this viewpoint exists. On a summer weekday you may have the entire terrace to yourself — a remarkable thing for a spot with a view this good, this close to one of Europe's busiest tourist corridors.
