Mercado Municipal de Abastos, Mazarrón
The covered Mercado de Abastos on Calle Cánovas del Castillo is where Mazarrón does its real shopping — a compact, lively hall where farmers from the Campo de Mazarrón bring in tomatoes, peppers and lettuces that were in the ground the previous afternoon, and where the fish counter reflects exactly what the Puerto de Mazarrón boats landed that morning.
What to buy and eat
The Campo de Mazarrón is one of Spain's most productive market-garden zones, and the tomato varieties on sale here — including the prized tomate de la pera — have a sweetness and acidity that supermarket produce cannot match. Buy a bag, some local olive oil and a wedge of Murcia al vino goat's cheese for an instant picnic.
The fish stalls are a lesson in Mediterranean species: look for salmonetes (red mullet), dorada (gilt-head bream) and the small, intensely flavoured galeras (mantis shrimp) that are a regional speciality rarely seen outside Murcia.
Timing your visit
The market is at its busiest and best between 8 am and 11 am on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, when the widest range of stalls is open and the produce is freshest. It quietens significantly by midday.
The surrounding streets — particularly Calle Mayor — fill with a small weekly street market on Saturday mornings, selling clothing, household goods and seasonal fruit, making the whole neighbourhood feel agreeably alive.
