Torre del Candeliere & Cassero Senese Ramparts
Climb the 13th-century Torre del Candeliere and walk the connecting covered bridge onto the Cassero Senese fortifications for a 360-degree panorama that sweeps from the Colline Metallifere hills to the glittering Tyrrhenian Sea on a clear day. It is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in southern Tuscany, yet rarely crowded even in high summer.
The Tower Climb
The tower stands 41 metres tall and was originally used to regulate the town's water supply via an aqueduct — a fact that makes the view from the top feel doubly earned.
The wooden staircase inside is steep but manageable; the final platform is open-air and gives unobstructed sightlines over the terracotta roofscape of both the Città Vecchia and the later Città Nuova below.
The Cassero Ramparts Walk
A covered walkway links the tower to the Cassero Senese, the Sienese-built fortress added after 1335 when Siena conquered the town — you can feel the political shift in the architecture as Romanesque gives way to aggressive military Gothic.
Walking the ramparts at sunset, with the Maremma plain turning amber and the distant Isola d'Elba just visible on the horizon, is the single most photogenic moment Massa Marittima offers.
Practical Tips
The ticket office is located at the base of the tower on Via Moncini; a combined ticket covers both the tower and the Museo della Miniera, saving a few euros.
Binoculars are worth bringing — on exceptionally clear winter days after rain you can pick out Monte Amiata's summit to the southeast.
