Ristorante Il Cigno Trattoria dei Martini
Run by the Martini family since 1959, Il Cigno is the most respected table in Mantua for traditional Gonzaga cuisine — a cooking tradition that is genuinely unlike anything else in Lombardy. The tortelli di zucca here, filled with pumpkin, amaretti and mostarda, is the benchmark version.
What to Order
Start with the antipasto of salumi mantovani, then move to tortelli di zucca — the pasta is rolled thin, the filling sweet-savoury-spiced, and it arrives dressed only in sage butter and Grana Padano. This is the dish that defines Mantuan identity, and Il Cigno's version is textbook.
For a second course, the stracotto d'asino (slow-braised donkey) is a Gonzaga-era recipe that sounds alarming and tastes extraordinary — rich, dark and falling apart. Pair it with a glass of local Lambrusco Mantovano.
Atmosphere and Booking
The dining room occupies a 16th-century palazzo just off Piazza d'Arco, with terracotta floors, low vaulted ceilings and white tablecloths — formal enough to feel like an occasion, relaxed enough for a long lunch.
Reservations are essential at weekends and strongly advised midweek. The lunch menu offers slightly better value; expect to spend €45–60 per person with wine. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
