Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace)
The vast Gonzaga family palace sprawls across 500 rooms and 35,000 square metres, making it one of Italy's largest royal residences. Frescoed ceilings, gilded halls and Andrea Mantegna's breathtaking Camera degli Sposi await inside.
The Camera degli Sposi
Mantegna spent nine years painting this single room, completing it in 1474, and the result is a masterclass in illusionistic fresco. Courtiers, horses and a cheeky oculus ceiling trick the eye into seeing open sky above a marble balustrade.
Look up at that painted oculus — cherubs peer down at you over the rim, one balancing a tub on a pole, and the whole conceit feels astonishingly modern for the fifteenth century.
The Apartments and Armoury
Beyond the Camera, wander through the Sala dello Zodiaco with its star-map ceiling, the Galleria dei Mesi and the intimate Appartamento del Paradiso. Each room layers Gonzaga ambition onto stone and pigment.
The palace also holds Pisanello's recently restored late-Gothic tournament frescoes, discovered behind a wall in 1969 and still only partially uncovered — a genuine work-in-progress archaeological marvel.
