Restaurant Bages Gourmet (and the DO Pla de Bages Wine Scene)
The comarca of Bages has its own Denominació d'Origen — DO Pla de Bages — producing crisp white wines from the rare Picapoll grape and increasingly respected reds from Cabernet and Sumoll. Manresa is the natural base for exploring this underrated wine region, and a meal at one of the city's serious Catalan restaurants is the most delicious way in.
Where to Eat in Manresa
Restaurant Bages Gourmet on Carrer del Cos is one of the city's most respected tables, serving modern Catalan cooking built around seasonal Bages ingredients — salt cod with romesco, slow-cooked lamb from the nearby Berguedà, and desserts showcasing local honey and hazelnuts. The wine list leans heavily and proudly into DO Pla de Bages bottles.
For a more casual experience, the tapas bars around Plaça de Sant Domènec serve excellent patatas bravas, croquetes de bacallà and pan amb tomàquet — the Catalan ritual of rubbing toasted bread with ripe tomato and olive oil that you should eat at least once a day while in the region.
Picapoll Grape and the DO Pla de Bages Wineries
The Picapoll grape is almost unique to Bages and produces a floral, mineral white wine that pairs beautifully with the region's freshwater fish and salt cod dishes. Several wineries within 20 kilometres of Manresa offer tastings and cellar tours, including Abadal (in Bages), Mas Llossanes and Collbaix — all bookable directly through their websites.
The DO Pla de Bages wine route is a well-signposted driving circuit through vineyards, medieval villages and farmhouses that makes an excellent half-day or full-day excursion from Manresa. Autumn harvest season — late September to mid-October — is the most atmospheric time to visit the wineries.
