El Soho Arts District
Wedged between the port and the historic centre, El Soho is Málaga's creative quarter — a compact grid of streets transformed since 2013 by the MAUS (Málaga Arte Urbano Soho) project into an open-air gallery of world-class murals painted by artists including Shepard Fairey, Okuda San Miguel and ROA.
The murals and galleries
The neighbourhood's most famous work is Okuda San Miguel's enormous geometric mural covering an entire apartment block on Calle Vendeja — a cascade of multicoloured triangles and human figures that has become one of the most photographed walls in southern Spain. Pick up a free MAUS map from the tourist office on Plaza de la Marina to find all 30+ official pieces.
The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC) anchors the district's cultural credibility with free entry and a permanent collection that includes works by Tracey Emin, Thomas Hirschhorn and Dinos Chapman alongside strong temporary exhibitions.
Eating and drinking in El Soho
The neighbourhood has developed a strong restaurant scene independent of the tourist trail. Kaleja on Calle Mármoles — two Michelin stars — is the city's most exciting fine-dining address, where chef Dani Carnero reinterprets Andalusian flavour with surgical precision. Book weeks in advance.
For something more casual, the string of terrace bars on Calle Córdoba fill up from 19:00 with a young local crowd. La Cosmopolita on nearby Calle José Denis Belgrano is a beloved neighbourhood institution serving creative Andalusian sharing plates and natural wines.
