Castillo de Gibralfaro
Perched 130 metres above sea level on the Gibralfaro hill, this 14th-century Nasrid castle delivers the most jaw-dropping 360-degree view of Málaga: the bullring, the port, the cathedral towers and the Costa del Sol coastline stretching to the horizon.
The view and the fortress
The castle's double-ring of ramparts and eight towers are remarkably intact, and you can walk the entire parapet wall — a circuit of about 20 minutes — with the Mediterranean glittering below you on one side and the forested Montes de Málaga on the other.
Sunset is the magic hour: the warm Andalusian light turns the sandstone walls amber and the sea goes from turquoise to deep violet. Arrive at least 30 minutes before sundown to claim a spot on the western parapet.
Getting up the hill
The most scenic approach is the zigzag footpath that climbs from the Alcazaba gardens, passing through fragrant pine and eucalyptus — allow 20–25 minutes on foot. Alternatively, Bus Line 35 departs from Paseo del Parque every 30 minutes and drops you at the castle gate.
The Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro hotel sits right beside the castle entrance; even if you're not staying, its terrace bar is the best place in the city for a cold Alhambra beer with a view.
