Merluza a la Sidra at Casa Consuelo

Founded in 1935 in the nearby village of Otur (5 km east of Luarca), Casa Consuelo is one of the most celebrated restaurants on the entire Asturian coast and holds a long-standing reputation for classic Cantabrian seafood done with quiet precision. The signature hake in cider sauce is a dish that defines the region.

The Dish That Made the Restaurant Famous

Merluza a la sidra is deceptively simple — thick fillets of Atlantic hake poached in a sauce of local Asturian cider, clams, onion and parsley — but the quality of the fish sourced directly from Luarca's lonja makes the version at Casa Consuelo exceptional. The sauce is bright, slightly tart and deeply savoury all at once.

The restaurant also excels with percebes (barnacles), nécoras (velvet crabs) and kokotxas (hake cheeks), all sourced locally. Order the mariscos as a starter and the merluza as a main for the full Asturian seafood experience.

Planning Your Visit

Casa Consuelo is a proper sit-down restaurant, not a pintxos bar, so booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially on summer weekends and during the Semana Grande festival in August. The dining room is traditional and unfussy — white tablecloths, wooden beams, a wine list heavy on Albariño and Asturian whites.

Budget around €40–55 per person for a full meal with wine. For a lighter, cheaper taste of the same kitchen, the bar area often serves raciones without a reservation.
