Luarca Weekly Market (Mercado Semanal)

Every Tuesday morning the streets around the old town fill with stalls selling Asturian cheeses, cider, honey, chorizos, garden vegetables and handmade crafts — a market that feels genuinely local rather than curated for tourists. It is the best single place to stock up on edible souvenirs and taste the region's produce.

What to Look For

Head straight for the cheese stalls: Asturias produces more than 40 varieties of cheese and the market typically has a handful of small producers selling Gamonéu, Afuega'l Pitu and Casín — all with protected designation of origin status. Vendors are generous with samples, so go hungry.

The charcuterie stalls are equally compelling: Asturian chorizo is smoked and paprika-rich, and the morcilla (blood sausage) made with onion rather than rice is a regional speciality worth taking home vacuum-packed.

Timing and Practicalities

The market sets up from around 9 a.m. and begins winding down by 2 p.m. The best produce — especially wild mushrooms in autumn and fresh berries in summer — sells out by 11 a.m., so arrive early.

The market spills across several streets in the upper town near the Ayuntamiento (town hall). Bring cash; most stalls do not accept cards. A reusable bag is useful as plastic is increasingly discouraged by vendors.
