Tucked into the town centre on Calle Ruiz just off the main square, Los Alcázares' covered municipal market is where residents actually shop — a lively, no-nonsense space packed with the best of Murcia's legendary fruit, vegetable and seafood output.
What to look for inside
Murcia is Spain's market garden, and the stalls here reflect that status with pride. Expect towers of locally grown tomatoes, pimientos de piquillo, fat white garlic heads, fresh figs in season and the region's famous pimentón de Murcia. The produce is sold at prices that will make visitors from northern Europe blink in disbelief.
The fish counter is the star of the show. Mar Menor specialities like dorada (gilt-head bream) and lubina (sea bass) farmed in the lagoon sit alongside fresh lenguado (sole), gambas and coquinas — tiny clams that are a Murcian obsession.
How to make the most of your visit
Arrive before 10 am on a Saturday for the widest selection and a chance to chat with stallholders who are genuinely happy to explain how to cook what they're selling. A few stalls sell prepared olives, local cheeses and embutidos (cured meats) that make excellent picnic supplies for a day at Calblanque.
The market square outside hosts an informal flea-and-craft stall extension on weekend mornings. It's a good place to pick up hand-painted ceramics and local honey without the tourist markup of a souvenir shop.
