Casino de Los Alcázares (Antiguo Casino)
Hidden in plain sight on the town's main square, the early-20th-century Casino de Los Alcázares is a beautifully preserved Modernista building that once served as the social club for the wealthy Murcian families who turned this fishing village into a fashionable spa resort. Most visitors walk past it without a second glance — which is their loss.
Architecture and history
Built in the 1920s, the Casino's facade combines azulejo tilework, wrought-iron balconies and arched loggias in a style that echoes the grander casinos of Cartagena and the Valencian coast. The interior retains original plasterwork ceilings, a sweeping timber staircase and period floor tiles that have somehow survived a century of use.
The building's history tracks the rise of Los Alcázares as a resort: it hosted dances, card games and theatrical performances for the bourgeoisie who arrived by train from Murcia city to take the supposedly therapeutic Mar Menor waters. A framed collection of early-20th-century photographs inside documents that vanished world.
What's there today and how to visit
The Casino now functions partly as a cultural centre hosting temporary art exhibitions, local association events and occasional live music evenings. Entry to the ground-floor exhibition space is usually free and open during daytime hours — just push the door.
Even if no exhibition is running, the building's exterior is worth ten minutes of careful attention. Sit at the café tables on the square opposite, order a cortado and look up at the facade: the detail in the ceramic panels and the ironwork is extraordinary for a town of this size.
