Vallée de l'Indre & Sentier des Bords de l'Indre
Below the château cliffs, the Indre River winds through a lush corridor of willows, alders and wildflower meadows that feels entirely removed from the medieval drama above. The Sentier des Bords de l'Indre is a flat, well-signed walking trail that follows the riverbank for several kilometres and is one of the loveliest easy walks in the southern Loire Valley.
The Walk
The most rewarding section starts from the Pont de Champigny at the foot of the Cité Royale and heads south-east along the left bank, passing old stone wash-houses (lavoirs) and the occasional fisherman dangling a line for pike. The round trip to the Moulin de Liré and back is about 8 km and takes roughly two hours at a gentle pace.
In spring, the meadows alongside the path are carpeted with marsh marigolds and ragged robin; in summer, herons stalk the shallows and kingfishers flash electric blue between the riverside willows.
Wildlife & Practicalities
The Indre valley is a recognised wildlife corridor and a good spot for birdwatchers — look for grey wagtails, little egrets and, if you are patient and quiet at dusk, the occasional European otter sliding into the water.
The path is flat and suitable for families with pushchairs on the first 2 km section. Cycling is possible along parts of the route; bikes can be rented from Loches' tourist office area. Bring water as there are no cafés on the trail itself.
