Marché de Loches (Wednesday & Saturday)

Twice a week the Place du Blé and surrounding streets of the lower town transform into a bustling open-air market where local producers from the Touraine sell goat's cheese, rillons, strawberries and Vouvray wine direct from the farm. It is as authentic as French markets get — no tourist tat, mostly locals.

What to Buy

The Touraine produces some of France's finest chèvre, and you will find rounds of Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine AOC — the long ash-rolled log — alongside younger, creamier fromages frais. Pair one with a jar of local walnut honey and you have a perfect picnic.

Rillons de Tours (chunky pork belly confit) and rillettes are sold by the scoop from several charcuterie stalls. The Saturday market is larger and draws more producers, including organic vegetable growers from the Indre valley.

Eating & Atmosphere

A handful of stalls sell hot galettes, crêpes and roasted chicken straight off the spit — grab a paper-wrapped half-chicken and eat it on the stone steps near the collegiate church of Saint-Ours for an effortlessly local lunch.

The market winds down by 13:00, so arrive by 09:30 for the best selection. The Wednesday market is quieter and more neighbourhood-focused, making it the better choice if you want easy conversation with producers.
